A native of Coatbridge, I
have lived and worked in Glasgow for 45 years. For fourteen years I
was drama critic for the “Jewish Echo” during which time I
wrote my first play “Opening Night” while studying
drama at Glasgow University. The play was premiered at the Edinburgh
International Festival Fringe. In reviewing the play, the editor of
the “Echo” wrote: “Our drama critic for many years, Joe
McDonagh has now turned his hand to playwriting. Gamekeeper turned
poacher, perhaps.” Well, the gamekeeper went on to write twenty more
one act plays which have achieved considerable success in drama
festivals over the years. |

In 1999 I was commissioned by Lothian and Borders Police to write a short play as part of an extensive Road Safety campaign. The play “We’re No Angels” was performed professionally in 150 venues throughout Scotland. I wrote a weekly theatre column for the “Glasgow Herald” for five years and I am currently writing gags and sketches for the BBC Radio Scotland Comedy Unit. I have written 21 one act plays, two of which “Blow the Bugle” and “The Hotel Game” are written in conjunction with my friend and colleague John Watson. The former was premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe. |
